Myself like many other iPhone 3GS owners have decided against jailbreaking our devices. For me, the big reason I would jailbreak my 3G was so that I could shoot video using Cycorder. But with the 3GS’ video capabilities I don’t need that app anymore. But a new application coming soon may sway some people to rethink jailbreaking.

photo-1If you’re an iPhone user that jailbreaks or unlocks your phone, there’s good news as it relates to Apple’s new OS – Snow Leopard. The Dev-Team says upgrade away – it causes no problem with the process. Here’s what the Dev-Team has posted on its blog

  • You can use redsn0w to jailbreak any iPhone or iPod Touch using OS X, Windows, or Linux.  For both 3.0 and 3.0.1 firmwares, you should point redsn0w at the 3.0 IPSW.  If you see it hang at “waiting for reboot”, just unplug and replug that USB cable.
  • You can use ultrasn0w to unlock the iPhone 3G/3GS, or BootNeuter to unlock the iPhone 2G.  Both ultrasn0w and BootNeuter are available via Cydia.
  • You can use PwnageTool for Mac to create custom IPSWs with pre-installed packages.

We went to Hawrelak Park this afternoon to enjoy the annual Heritage Festival in Edmonton. It was lots of fun with a lot of great food and entertainment. Of course I had my iPhone and so I shot some of the sights and sounds using Cycorder. If you have a chance to take in the Edmonton Heritage Festival, I highly recommend it. Enjoy my video.

dev-teamIt’s no secret Apple doesn’t want you modifying your iPhone or iPod. They’ve gone on record saying it’s illegal. Well a visitor to Meador’s Musings pointed me towards the Apple website where Apple now talks all about the potential problems associated with jailbreaking and unlocking your devices.

3.0.1

Apple today released an update to its iPhone OS.  3.0.1 fixes the known SMS security breach that many news outlets and blogs have been discussing. Here’s what’s posted on the Apple website…

A memory corruption issue exists in the decoding of SMS messages. Receiving a maliciously crafted SMS message may lead to an unexpected service interruption or arbitrary code execution. This update addresses the issue through improved error handling. Credit to Charlie Miller of Independent Security Evaluators, and Collin Mulliner of Fraunhofer SIT for reporting this issue.

Of course as always, if you have a jailbroken or unlocked iPhone you’ll want to hold off on updating. There are reports of the update breaking the jailbreak. I’ll let you know when it’s safe to update and what you have to do. If you don’t care about jailbreaking or unlocking then simply update via iTunes.
