side ipad

This is one of the coolest uses for the iPad I’ve seen to date. People eating at the Global Mundo Tapas in the North Sydney Rydges Hotel can now order their food and drinks with the iPad.

The restaurant has created its own app which allows people to browse the menu choices, place an order, see pictures of the dishes, and get suggestions on what the best wine or other dish choices are for your meal.

Even more impressive, the app keeps track of stock for the restaurant. For example,  it means if a wine is sold out, it won’t appear on the menu.

Here is a video from News.com.au showcasing the iPad in action as a menu.

OCEANBLUE

It was my sons first birthday recently. For his party we did an under the sea theme. We had plenty of fish decorations and my wife made the most amazing turtle cake.

I thought it would be fun to show off the iPad during the party, so I wanted to find a cool Aquarium type app. I found two that I purchased, so here is a look at the first one.

It’s been a slow rollout prior to the official launch of the iPad in Canada, but we can now download Apple’s iWorks apps. The on device app store has been live since last Thursday, but the big missing apps were those from Apple.

iCurling

I recently received a message on twitter from developers MaxNick. They said they had a new iPhone app that myself, my website readers and YouTube viewers might be interested in. iCurling. Being Canadian I jumped at the opportunity to review this game.

I’ve been playing it several days, and I can honestly say I’m really enjoying it. Just a quick note. The app can be played on the iPad as well. You can tap the two times and make it full screen. Yes, like all the other iPhone apps on the iPad it makes the graphics a little pixely. But for this game, as it is not graphic intensive, it plays and looks really good.

One day after I post my work around for getting apps onto my iPad here in Canada, Apple has decided to turn on the international App Store app. I’m not sure if it only works for those countries getting the iPad on May 28th, but it’s working here in Canada.

I can now download iPad apps directly onto my device without either signing into my American account or relying on iTunes on my MacBook Pro.

One thing I should mention, iBooks is still unavailable as are Apple’s iWorks apps – Pages, Numbers and Keynote. Hopefully those will show up soon.

UPDATE: Starbucks has commented via Twitter about the apps not yet being available in Canada …

we are working on bringing the iPhone apps to Canada, promise! Will announce it here as soon as I have a date!

Lets hope the announcement comes soon.

I love a good cup of coffee – and while Starbucks isn’t usually my first choice, I do know there are plenty of them around when I need a quick caffeine fix. I’ve used a couple of apps that show the locations of the nearest Starbucks before, but I was never blown away. So I was really excited when I heard Starbucks was releasing official apps for the iPhone and iPod Touch. What was until I tried to find them in the app store.

I don’t think I need to explain who the Crasher Squirrel is – but for those that may have been living under a rock for the past couple of months, here is a quick overview. The Brandts are taking pictures of themselves in Banff National Park. While doing so, a curious Columbian Ground Squirrel pops up in front of the camera. The Brandts – using a wireless remote – snap a picture with the squirrel and send it to National Geographic Weekly for a photo contest. From there the photo goes viral around the world appearing in newspapers, on TV and all over the Internet. It’s so popular people have pasted the squirrel into a number of different pictures. A quick Google search will net you TONS of results. Now that wily squirrel has found its way onto the iPhone.

Snapture

When I used to jailbreak my iPhone 3G, I loved using Snapture. I felt it improved upon the iPhone’s built in camera. Now you don’t need to jailbreak your phone to enjoy the applications features. It’s available in the iTunes store.
