unlocked

UPDATE: So I was just thinking about the wording – and I think the key is “Buy your iPhone from Apple commitment-free.” So my take is you pay the full price for the phone from Apple and it comes unlocked. If you buy the phone from one of our wireless providers with the subsidized price, it will be locked to that carrier for the duration of the contract. Of course if you pay to get out of your contract early you could probably get the phone unlocked at that point as well.

The Canadian Apple online store is once again live. And it offers some interesting information about the iPhone 4 here in Canada.

Yes, we can’t pre-order it yet, but the above picture seems to indicate the iPhone 4 will be unlocked, or at least Apple will unlock it for you if you want to change carriers.

The caption from the website reads ….

It works with the carrier of your choice. Buy an iPhone from the Apple Online Store and choose your own GSM carrier. You can change carriers at any time.

This could also mean Apple will unlock your your current 3G or 3GS. Almost all our wireless providers currently offer the iPhone, so I’ve been speculating for a while now that this could lead to an unlocked phone here in Canada.

I’ll update the story as more information becomes available. But for right now it appears as though us Canadians might have to wait a little longer for the iPhone 4, but it will be worth the wait.

ipads

I always enjoy a big Apple event – and in my mind there wasn’t any bigger than Friday May 28th, 2010 in Edmonton. Not only was the iPad launched internationally, but it also marked the grand opening of the second Apple store in the city. This one located in Southgate Centre.

As I mentioned in my previous entry, I arrived at 5:30am and was about 25th in line for the iPad. It was for my dad, and he picked it up Sunday morning and was so happy. That made standing in line for 2.5 hours well worth it.

8AMIf you are one of those Canadians looking to stop by an Apple store Friday for the launch of the iPad, you’ll need to get out of bed a little earlier. Apple will start selling the popular device in its stores at 8am.

At most slocations this should clear out the lines before the stores are open to the general public not looking for the iPad. I say most stores because the same day, Apple has its grand opening of its second retail store in Edmonton. It’s located in Southgate Centre. As per usual during an opening, the first 1000 people through the door will receive a free t-shirt.

photos-hardware-01-20090608Over the weekend I asked you when I should try my luck at my fifth iPhone 3GS. A couple of you figured I should get it ASAP while a few more said I should maybe wait a little longer. Well I’m glad I did wait. I really want to see what Telus and Bell bring to the table as far as voice and data plans.

The big news today in Canada is that both Telus and Bell are getting the iPhone in November. This mornings official announcements set off a whirlwind of speculation on what this will mean for Canadian fans of the iPhone. Here’s my take …

iPhone3gs

UPDATE: Telus will ALSO be seeing the iPhone next month. You can check out the details on its website. That means Canadians can get the iPhone on all 3 major carriers.

It’s been rumoured for months and this morning it’s official. Starting next month (November) Canadians will have another choice when it comes to which carrier they want to use with their iPhone – Rogers or Bell.

The saying is “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery” – if it is indeed true then Apple is basking in praise. The folks in Cupertino have come up with some very creative ads for their products – and some not so creative ones. But when one does work, there are always a lot of copycats — right BlackBerry?

This shouldn’t come as a shock – I’m sure I can go through Apple ads and pick out stuff it’s tried to immitate. So it’s no surprise to me Bell’s new ad campaign (click on the video above) for the Palm Pre here in Canada has a very iPhone feel to it. Continue reading »

iTablet Mockup

Another new week brings another new iTablet rumour. This one comes from Barron’s [via MacRumors]. It cites a veteran analyst (who doesn’t want to be named – go figure) who claims to have seen and used the rumoured Apple iTablet.

iTablet Mockup

Before I get into this, let me be VERY clear. This is in no way fact – nor have I heard any rumours about this – this is just my thoughts. The fabled iTablet is making its way through the blogs again today. Most are quoting the Financial Times article that Apple is “racing to offer a tablet-sized computer for the Christmas season”. No concrete details about specs – other than the rumor it would be a 10 inch touch screen most likely running the iPhone OS. The Financial Times also goes on to write book publishers may be trying to get their products on the iTablet and that Apple is also in negotiations with the big four record labels on a project codenamed “Cocktail”. It would try to make album purchases more compelling by adding interactive materials like photos, lyric sheets, liner notes and more.

Great, but what about Telus & Bell? Read on ….
