The iPhone 4 has finally been released in Canada. July 30th was the big day, and of course I was in line to make sure I got my phone on launch day. After much debate and some some recommendations from some Edmontonians on Twitter, I decided to line up at the West Edmonton Mall Apple Store. After all, it was the first Apple store in Edmonton and Alberta. So it was probably going to have the most stock.
I always enjoy a big Apple event – and in my mind there wasn’t any bigger than Friday May 28th, 2010 in Edmonton. Not only was the iPad launched internationally, but it also marked the grand opening of the second Apple store in the city. This one located in Southgate Centre.
As I mentioned in my previous entry, I arrived at 5:30am and was about 25th in line for the iPad. It was for my dad, and he picked it up Sunday morning and was so happy. That made standing in line for 2.5 hours well worth it.
So here I am again – in line at an Apple store – once again it’s to buy an iPad. For those who’ve been following my blog, yes I already have an iPad, but this one isn’t for me.
A couple of days ago my dad played around with my iPad and loved it. He really wanted one, but by then the pre-orders had already changed to June delivery. So he was a little bummed that he couldn’t get one at launch.
Enter the good son. With Apple opening its second store in Edmonton on the same day as the iPad launch, I figured it would be a good chance to get him and iPad. So I got here at 5:30am, for the 8am launch.
As of about 5:45am I am about 25th in line and more and more people are starting to show up. So I’m fairly confidant I’ll be able to get my dad a 32GB WiFi + 3G iPad.
Sure, you may think I’m crazy for doing this all over again, but it’s for my dad. Plus it’s a lot of fun hanging out with other Apple fans. You do meet a lot of great people. Plus I get a new Apple t-shirt. Can’t beat that.
If you are one of those Canadians looking to stop by an Apple store Friday for the launch of the iPad, you’ll need to get out of bed a little earlier. Apple will start selling the popular device in its stores at 8am.
At most slocations this should clear out the lines before the stores are open to the general public not looking for the iPad. I say most stores because the same day, Apple has its grand opening of its second retail store in Edmonton. It’s located in Southgate Centre. As per usual during an opening, the first 1000 people through the door will receive a free t-shirt.
We went to Hawrelak Park this afternoon to enjoy the annual Heritage Festival in Edmonton. It was lots of fun with a lot of great food and entertainment. Of course I had my iPhone and so I shot some of the sights and sounds using Cycorder. If you have a chance to take in the Edmonton Heritage Festival, I highly recommend it. Enjoy my video.
Sorry I haven’t had an update in 24 hours. I’ve been metling in the +30 degree celcius weather we are enjoying in Edmonton. Yesterday after work Laura, Devon & I sprinted to my mom’s place and spent the day and evening there because she has air conditioning. It’s going to be another scorcher today but I hope to have an update or 2 later tonight. Here is a picture of just how hot it got Friday. Have a great weekend everyone.
We’ve had quite the storm so far tonight. The wind really started to guest, then the really dark clouds moved in, the thunder and lightning started, and then the rain and hail came. The wind was so strong there are some trees down in southeast Edmonton – and I even saw one on top of a car. Here is a quick video of the rain and hail as it came down outside our house. Ok, so I just shot a VERY quick burst of lightning. I looked like it was coming straight at the house. The storm seems to have died down now – 11:52pm.
